Australian Parliament House

Standing tall on Capital Hill in Canberra, Australia's Parliament House is more than just a meeting place for politicians. It's a architectural marvel and a powerful symbol of the nation's democracy.

A Unique Design:

The brainchild of Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp Architects, the Parliament House features two curved walls that snake around the building, separating it into four key areas:

  • The House of Representatives and member offices: The eastern side houses the lower house of Parliament, where debates and votes on legislation take place.
  • The Senate and senator offices: On the western side, the Senate, the upper house, convenes to review and approve laws passed by the House of Representatives.
  • A central zone: This public space showcases Australian art and offers visitors a glimpse into the workings of government.
  • The Prime Minister's and ministers' offices: The southern end houses the offices of the Prime Minister and other leading government figures.

Rich in Symbolism:

The design incorporates symbolism that reflects Australia's landscape and heritage. The curved walls evoke boomerangs, a nod to the country's Indigenous people. The central flagstaff, one of the tallest in the world, proudly displays the Australian National Flag.

A Public Space:

Canberra's Parliament House isn't just for politicians. Visitors can explore the building through tours, marvel at the art collection, and learn about Australia's democratic process in interactive exhibits.

Planning Your Visit:

If you're considering adding Parliament House to your Australian itinerary, be sure to check the official website (https://www.aph.gov.au/) for tour times and opening hours.
